About Subspecies

Subspecies follows vampire brothers Stefan and Radu Vladislas in Romania, with Michelle Morgan caught between them. The first film arrived on video August 8, 1991 as the first American film shot in post-Communist Romania. Bloodstone: Subspecies II from April 20, 1993 and Bloodlust: Subspecies III from February 16, 1994 continue Michelle's turn under Radu.

Vampire Journals from February 25, 1997 is a spinoff in the same world about Ash hunting a stronger lord. Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm from December 8, 1998 tries to cure Michelle. Subspecies V: Blood Rise from May 15, 2023 is a prequel about Radu's birth and training. Ted Nicolaou directed all six.

Good to know

Release order is the recommended path, because Blood Rise assumes you know Radu and the Bloodstone. Chronological order would move Blood Rise first, then Vampire Journals, then the main four, but that softens Michelle's arc. Vampire Journals shares actors and lore without Michelle, so some lists skip it. Keep it in, since Ash returns in Bloodstorm and the connection pays off there.
