About Takashi Yamazaki

Returner from 2002 opened Yamazaki's run with effects-driven science fiction before the Always trilogy rebuilt postwar Tokyo. Ballad from 2009 and Space Battleship Yamato from 2010 proved he could mount period and space spectacle, while The Eternal Zero from 2013 became a wartime hit. Stand by Me Doraemon from 2014 turned the robot cat into CG.

Destiny from 2017 mixed fantasy with family drama, and the Doraemon sequel from 2020 plus Ghost Book from 2022 kept his family streak. Godzilla Minus One from 2023 closed the run so far with a postwar kaiju drama that won the visual effects Oscar. Watch in release order, since the effects ambition and the sentimentality scale up together.

Good to know

The sentimentality is the point and the test: viewers allergic to tears should brace from the Always films onward. His Shirogumi effects background shows in every set piece. The Doraemon films need no series knowledge and work as family entries. Start with Always for period charm or Minus One for scale, then fill the middle in order, since none of the stories connect.
