About The Lorax

The Lorax from 1972 is a 25 minute musical TV special from DePatie-Freleng, directed by Hawley Pratt and written by Dr. Seuss. It aired February 14, 1972 on CBS with Eddie Albert and Bob Holt. The 2012 film is an 86 minute CGI musical from Illumination, directed by Chris Renaud with Kyle Balda.

The 2012 film opened March 2, 2012 on Seuss 108th birthday, cost 70 million and earned 349 million worldwide. Danny DeVito voices the Lorax with Zac Efron as Ted and Ed Helms as the Once-ler. No Lorax 2 is in development on Illumination slate through 2028.

Good to know

Either version works alone because both adapt the same book with no shared continuity. Release order is simplest: the spare 1972 special in 25 minutes, then the expanded 2012 film with Thneedville framing. The stage musical is separate and not needed for the screen story. The 2012 film was the second fully CGI Seuss feature after Horton Hears a Who.
