About The Thing
The Thing tracks a shape shifting alien found in polar ice. The Thing from Another World in 1951 sets the Arctic base siege, The Thing in 1982 reboots it at Outpost 31 with MacReady and Childs blood tests, and The Thing in 2011 rewinds to the Norwegian camp days before the dog run.
Watch the 1982 film first despite the prequel setting, because the 2011 camp was built as an answer to its opening. Release order keeps the imitation reveals intact, while chronological order spoils the 1982 dog chase. No fourth film has been dated, and the Blumhouse reboot talk never reached cameras.
Good to know
Release order wins first time because the 2011 prequel assumes Outpost 31 fates. Watch Carpenter 1982 for the blood test grammar before the Norwegian camp reframes it. The 1951 version plays as a separate Howard Hawks take rather than required canon, so sample it after 1982. Treat the 2011 film as a lead in on rewatches once the 1982 end is known.
