About Tobe Hooper

Tobe Hooper changed horror with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in 1974, a sun-baked nightmare shot for almost nothing near Austin. Eaten Alive followed in 1976, a lurid motel-and-crocodile shocker, and the Salem's Lot miniseries in 1979 gave vampires network-television dread. The Funhouse (1981) is a clean carnival slasher, while Poltergeist (1982) balanced suburban warmth with genuinely scary set pieces.

Lifeforce (1985) swung for space vampires over London, and Invaders from Mars (1986) remade a 1950s paranoia tale for kids of the video era. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) answered his own classic with comedy and gore. The Mangler (1995) adapted Stephen King, and Djinn (2013) closed his career in the UAE. Release order works best, since the films share no continuity.

Good to know

Hooper died in 2017, so this guide is complete and no new entries will arrive. Salem's Lot is a two-part TV miniseries included because it ranks among his most seen works, and it often circulates in a shortened film cut. Authorship of Poltergeist is still debated, with Steven Spielberg's shadow over the shoot, but Hooper holds the directing credit. Start with the 1974 original before touching any remake.
