About Wolfgang Petersen
Wolfgang Petersen broke through with Das Boot in 1981, a submarine epic that earned him Oscar nominations for directing and adapted screenplay. The NeverEnding Story followed in 1984 as a large scale fantasy built at Bavaria Studios, then Enemy Mine in 1985 paired two stranded enemies on an alien world. Shattered came in 1991 as a smaller amnesia thriller.
In the Line of Fire arrived in 1993 with Clint Eastwood as a Secret Service guard, Outbreak in 1995 tracked a virus panic, Air Force One in 1997 put the president in an airborne siege, and The Perfect Storm closed this pick in 2000. Watch in release order, since the German control of enclosed spaces carries straight into the Hollywood set pieces.
Good to know
These are standalone stories with no shared continuity, so there is no chronological order to untangle. Das Boot also exists as a longer television cut from 1985, but the 1981 feature is the entry listed here. Later blockbusters such as Troy from 2004 and Poseidon from 2006 fall outside this starter pick. He died in 2022, so this guide is complete. Start with Das Boot if eight films feels like too many.
