Four provocations in order.

About Yasuzo Masumura

Yasuzo Masumura directed bright satires about ambition, desire and war medicine. Giants and Toys mocks candy-company rivalry with neon speed. Manji follows an Osaka wife drawn into a lesbian affair.

Red Angel tracks a wartime nurse through Manchurian field hospitals. Blind Beast closes the essential run with a sculptor held captive by a blind model. Watching in order shows Masumura pushing melodrama into grotesque while keeping the same restless dolly moves. The films share provocation rather than characters.

Good to know

Watch in release order. The four titles are standalone, so no spoilers carry over. Starting with Giants and Toys first explains Masumura's ad-world cynicism before the later erotic horror. All four stream with subtitles via arthouse labels. The later Hanzo and television works can be explored after these essentials.
