About Zorro
Zorro's screen lives share a mask and little else. The Mark of Zorro (1940) with Tyrone Power is the classic origin; Disney's series (1957 to 1959) with Guy Williams defined the character for television; the 1990s series (1990 to 1993) retold it for syndication; and The Mask of Zorro (1998) passes the blade to Banderas with Hopkins as the aged Diego.
Release order shows the legend evolving: the 1940 film for the origin, the Disney run for the definitive TV take, the 1990s series for the syndicated revival, and the Banderas duology (with The Legend of Zorro, 2005) for the modern close. Each version restates the secret, so start anywhere. The 1974 TV film is a footnote for completists.
Good to know
The Disney series' first-season arc is the essential Zorro television; later seasons vary. The 1990s series' family-friendly tone differs sharply from the Banderas films' swashbuckling. The Legend of Zorro underperformed and ended that continuity. A new Zorro series has been discussed for years without filming, so the Banderas duology is the endpoint. The character's pulp origins predate all screen versions.
