Carnivale splits Dust Bowl drifter Ben joining a traveling carnival and preacher Brother Justin rising in California as avatars of light and dark. Season 1 from 2003 sets Management dreams and the pitch across 12 episodes. Season 2 from 2005 rushes the New Canaan confrontation across 12 episodes after renewal doubts.
Two seasons aired with creator plans for six cut short by cost. Watch in broadcast order since visions, tarot and radio sermons mirror each other. The finale closes one battle but leaves the war open by design, with no film or revival ordered to finish it.
Good to know
Broadcast order is the only order with carnival and ministry cuts timed to mirror. Season 1 plays slow through farm towns, so give it four episodes before the avatar rules lock. Season 2 assumes the Management reveal, which makes skipping costly. Treat season 2 as an open end rather than a close, since HBO cancelled past the planned six year arc.
