About Essex Serpent
The Essex Serpent follows widowed naturalist Cora Seaborne leaving London for Essex with son Frankie and maid Martha after her husband's death. Episode 1 stages the Aldwinter arrival, missing girl talk and first serpent whispers along the Blackwater. Episodes 2 and 3 deepen her bond with pastor Will Ransome and surgeon Luke Garrett while school gossip, missing livestock and chapel tension split the village.
Episode 4 centers the canal dredge, a drowned discovery and rising panic that turns neighbors against Cora. Episodes 5 and 6 carry the church inquest, Stella Ransome's illness, Martha's London fight and Cora's reckoning between science and affection. Clio Barnard adapted Sarah Perry's novel for Apple across six May 2022 episodes. Watch 1 through 6 in order.
Good to know
Watch episodes 1 through 6 in release order, since serpent sightings, funeral fallout and Cora and Will's attachment build steadily. Sarah Perry's novel ends in the same place with extra inner life, so readers can compare after viewing. No second season was planned, so the six episodes stand as a finished Victorian mystery and romance.
