About Penny Dreadful
Penny Dreadful (2014 to 2016) gathers Victorian horror's icons, Dracula, Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, the Wolfman, around Eva Green's Vanessa Ives across three seasons of lush dread. Season 1 assembles the night crew, season 2 pits them against witches, and season 3 closes Vanessa's story on her terms.
City of Angels (2020) reboots the title in 1938 Los Angeles with new characters and folk horror, sharing only the brand. Watch the original three seasons in order, then City of Angels as a separate take. The original ends deliberately at season 3, which the showrunner chose over continuation.
Good to know
The season 3 ending is a genuine conclusion, not a cancellation wound: Vanessa's arc completes as designed. City of Angels was cancelled after one season and ends unresolved, so treat it as a bonus. The comics continue the original's story for devotees. The show's literary mashup rewards classic-horror literacy but explains every monster it uses.
