Sarah Jane Smith returns from classic Doctor Who as an Ealing journalist with Mr Smith and K9. Invasion of the Bane aired January 1, 2007 and introduces Maria and Luke. Series 1 ran 10 episodes from September 24, 2007. Series 2 ran 12 episodes from September 29, 2008 with the Brigadier returning.
Series 3 ran 12 episodes from October 15, 2009 and brings Rani after Maria leaves. Series 4 ran 12 episodes from October 11, 2010 with Jo Grant back. Series 5 ran 6 episodes from October 3 to October 18, 2011 and ends with The Man Who Never Was. Elisabeth Sladen died in April 2011, which is why Series 5 is short.
Good to know
Broadcast order is the only order that makes sense, since companions rotate. Maria leaves during Series 2, Rani arrives in Series 3, and Sky joins in Series 5. The 2009 Comic Relief short and the 2020 Farewell webisode are optional extras, not list entries. Doctor Who crossovers like The Stolen Earth help background but are not needed to follow Sarah Jane's team.
