About The Dropout
The Dropout is an American biographical drama miniseries created by Elizabeth Meriwether, based on the ABC News podcast of the same name hosted by Rebecca Jarvis. Amanda Seyfried plays Elizabeth Holmes, who founded Theranos, the biotechnology company that claimed to have developed blood tests from a drop of blood and then turned out to have lied about almost all of it.
The series is the first television project produced by Searchlight Television. It premiered on Hulu on March 3, 2022 with its first three episodes released together, then ran weekly through April 7 for eight episodes in total. The supporting cast includes Naveen Andrews, Elizabeth Marvel, William H. Macy, Stephen Fry, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Bill Irwin, Utkarsh Ambudkar, LisaGay Hamilton, Michael Ironside, Laurie Metcalf, Anne Archer and Sam Waterston.
It starts at Holmes as a teenager and works forward through her Stanford years, Wall Street money, the company's rise and the investigation that ends her company, so the eight episodes cover a whole life rather than one trial.
Good to know
Watch all eight episodes in order. It is one continuous story with no flashbacks to sort out and no separate chronology worth listing, so the release order is the watch order.
The first three episodes landed on the same day, which matters if you are following the weekly pattern.
The show is adapted from the podcast, not from the court record, so the structure is a life story rather than a trial drama. If you want the legal version of the same case, the podcast episodes and the documentary coverage of the conviction cover the same ground in a different order.
Seyfried's performance in the first two episodes is the reason the miniseries is remembered, and it earned her the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress at the 74th Primetime Emmys and the Golden Globe for Best Actress.
