About Barakamon

Barakamon follows calligrapher Handa exiled to the Goto islands after punching a critic, learning loose brushwork from Naru and neighbors across 12 episodes in 2014. Village life with fishing, shared meals and local kids pulls him from rigid city lines toward a warmer style with Naru leading the chaos that ends with Handa finding his own voice.

Handa-kun from 2016 prequels the tale with high school Handa misunderstood as cool while trying to stay alone and avoid rumors. It assumes the island growth is known for irony, so it works best watched last despite its earlier timeline, closing the comedy loop.

Good to know

Watch Barakamon 2014 first across all 12 episodes, then Handa-kun 2016 last for the best irony and school jokes. Keep each series in broadcast order. Story order would flip them but spoils the island payoff, so release order stays recommended for new viewers. Both runs stand complete with no sequel dated, so treat the pair as closed and finished as of this check.
