About Black Butler
Black Butler's canon path skips most of its own first two seasons. Season 1 from 2008 opens canon with the Red Butler arc and returns to canon for the Indian Butler stretch, while its middle and ending plus all of season 2 from 2010 with Alois are anime-original. Book of Circus from 2014 restarts from the manga directly after the Indian Butler arc, then Book of Murder in 2014 and Book of the Atlantic in 2017 continue it.
The Public School arc from 2024 and the Emerald Witch arc from 2025 keep that canon line going through Weston College and the German werewolf forest. Release order means sitting through the anime-original material, which contradicts later canon. Canon order below is recommended: the two season 1 stretches, then Circus onward straight to Emerald Witch.
Good to know
Follow canon order first. Season 1 episodes 1 to 6 plus 13 to 15 carry the manga arcs, and everything from Book of Circus onward assumes only those. Season 2 and the season 1 filler invent an ending the manga ignores, so save them for completism. The OVAs are extras except Book of Murder, which is canon between Circus and Atlantic. No new anime beyond Emerald Witch has been announced.
