About Monogatari
The Monogatari anime has aired in pieces since Bakemonogatari premiered in July 2009, following Koyomi Araragi through the oddities haunting his town. The books and the broadcasts do not line up: Kizumonogatari is an early novel, but its three films only reached theaters between January 2016 and January 2017, after four other seasons had already aired.
After Zoku Owarimonogatari in 2019 the story went quiet for five years, then returned in July 2024 as Off & Monster Season, fourteen episodes about the heroines after Araragi's time. Aniplex announced the next piece on July 2, 2026: Wazamonogatari: Karen Ogre, a single new episode for the winter 2026 broadcast. It adapts the Karen arc from the Wazamonogatari novel, with Karen Araragi climbing three mountains on a karate training trip.
Shaft is animating again, with Akiyuki Shinbo as chief director, Midori Yoshizawa directing, Fuyashi Tou on series scripts and Akio Watanabe on character design. There are 117 TV episodes and three films in all, plus this announced episode. The broadcast order and the novel order are genuinely different, which is why this guide keeps both.
Good to know
Broadcast order is how the story was paced for viewers and is the safe first choice. The novel order moves Kizumonogatari to its book position and splits Second Season around Hanamonogatari, which follows the books but rearranges the 2013 and 2014 broadcasts. Pick one list and finish it; the arcs rework themselves differently depending on where you start.
Karen Ogre is one episode, not a season. Aniplex announced it in July 2026 for the winter 2026 broadcast with no exact date, so it sits at the end of both lists as a pending item. Watch it after Off & Monster Season, since it follows the heroines into the next stage of their lives and assumes you know Karen from Nisemonogatari and Tsukimonogatari.
The three Kizumonogatari films are the only entries that must be watched as films. Koyomimonogatari is twelve shorts and works as a breather between the first and second films. Do not start with the films as a shortcut; they spoil the first season's central mystery.
