About Devilman

Devilman began as Go Nagai's 1972 manga about Akira Fudo merging with the demon Amon to fight invading demons. The 1972 Toei series ran 39 episodes as a lighter take for kids. The OVAs Devilman: The Birth (1987) and Devilman: Demon Bird (1990) adapted the manga faithfully and violently. Devilman Lady ran 26 episodes in 1998, and Devilman Crybaby streamed 10 episodes on Netflix in January 2018 from Science Saru.

Each anime is a separate retelling rather than a sequel. Crybaby follows the manga ending most closely and is treated by most guides as the definitive screen version, while the older entries are variants worth sampling afterward.

Good to know

Start with Devilman Crybaby, since it tells the complete manga story in ten episodes with modern animation. Then try the 1987 and 1990 OVAs for the classic 1980s take on the same material. The 1972 series is a kid-friendly alternate universe with a different tone and ending, so save it for last unless 1970s TV is specifically your interest.
