Watch Order

About Higurashi: When They Cry
Higurashi starts with the 2006 series asking the Hinamizawa questions across twenty-six episodes, then Kai in 2007 answers them over twenty-four. The Cat Killing Chapter special and Kai shorts slot beside those runs as extras. Rei from 2009 continues with new arcs, Kira from 2011 plays the same cast for comedy, and Outbreak from 2013 adapts the outbreak side story.
Gou from 2020 looks like a remake for one episode before revealing itself as a sequel with Satoko as the new driver, and Sotsu from 2021 answers Gou across fifteen episodes. Release order is required because Gou weaponizes nostalgia for the 2006 run directly. The loop structure means story order would flatten the mystery into a straight line and ruin the design.
Good to know
Watch in release order without skipping to Gou. The 2006 series plus Kai form the complete original answer, and Gou assumes both seen down to specific deaths. Rei continues the story while Kira and the specials stay optional comedy. Sotsu retells Gou from the other side rather than continuing past it, so the pair must be watched back to back. The time loops make chronology meaningless as a viewing path.
