Watch Order

About The Fable
Katsuhisa Minami's manga follows Akira Sato, a legendary hitman ordered to hide in Osaka for a year without killing anyone. Kan Eguchi directed two live-action films starring Junichi Okada, the first released June 21, 2019 and the sequel The Fable: The Killer Who Doesn't Kill released June 18, 2021 after a COVID delay from February. Both adapt the manga's early arcs with the same lead cast.
Tezuka Productions then made a separate anime version directed by Ryosuke Takahashi, with 25 episodes airing April 7 to September 29, 2024 on Nippon TV and streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. It retells the story from the start rather than continuing the films. A second season covering the Yamaoka arc premieres January 2027 with the cast and staff returning.
Good to know
There is no separate chronological order worth listing: the two films form one continuity and the anime starts over in another, so release order and the only sensible story order are the same list. Watch the 2019 film, then the 2021 sequel, then the 2024 anime season. Newcomers who only want animation can start with the anime and lose little, since it assumes no film knowledge.
