About Tokyo Ghoul
Tokyo Ghoul adapts Sui Ishida's manga across four TV seasons that follow Kaneki from human to half-ghoul to leader. Season 1 from 2014 covers the Anteiku introduction, Root A from 2015 takes an anime-original path, and the two :re cours from 2018 return to the manga through the Dragon climax.
Root A splits from the manga heavily in its second half, which is why manga readers treat it as a detour. OVAs Jack and Pinto slot before season 1 as prequels, and the story is complete with no continuation announced, so the four seasons plus OVAs are the full animated set.
Good to know
Watch seasons 1 through :re in release order, since :re assumes you know the Root A endpoint even where it diverged. Newcomers who want Ishida's intended plot should read the manga alongside Root A, because the anime shortcut skips whole arcs. The Jack and Pinto OVAs work any time before :re as backstory, and nothing beyond :re exists to wait for.
