About Tokyo Ghoul
Ken Kaneki is an ordinary student until an attack by a flesh-eating ghoul leaves him half-ghoul, stuck between humans and the ghouls of Anteiku cafe. Studio Pierrot's first season (12 episodes, July to September 2014) follows Sui Ishida's manga closely. Root A (12 episodes, January to March 2015) does not: it is an anime-original second season that contradicts the manga and confuses viewers when :re assumes manga events.
The two 2015 OVAs slot between Root A and :re. Jack (September 2015) is an Arima prequel, Pinto (December 2015) a Tsukiyama side story. Tokyo Ghoul:re then closes the anime in two 12-episode cours across 2018.
Good to know
Root A diverges from the manga, plainly stated: Kaneki joining Aogiri and several deaths differ from Ishida's story, and :re (2018) skips manga material to reconcile the gap. Manga readers often advise switching to the manga after season 1. The anime is complete and no sequel has been announced.
