About Vampire Hunter D
Vampire Hunter D adapts Hideyuki Kikuchi's novels about the dhampir D hunting vampires with his talking Left Hand. The 1985 film from Ashi Production covers the Doris vampire-rescue job. Bloodlust (2000) from Madhouse follows the Meier and Charlotte elopement with the Marcus brothers racing D.
The novels continue far past both films with dozens of volumes, so the anime covers two highlights rather than a series run. No new anime has been announced, leaving Bloodlust as the prestige telling rather than a series start.
Good to know
Watch the 1985 film first for the classic Frontier setup, then Bloodlust as the richer hunt. The films share only D and the Left Hand with new clients each time, so either starting point stands clean in a pinch. The novels continue the jobs for readers wanting the full dhampir catalog past both animated films.
