My Little Pony Watch Order

My Little Pony spans five generations since 1984, four of them animated, from the 1980s specials through Friendship Is Magic's 221 episodes to the G5 web series that ended October 17, 2024. The generations are separate stories, so this list runs in release order with each era labeled.

Release order, which is also chronological, since each generation stands alone and the stories inside them run forward. The Equestria Girls films sit at the end of the Generation 4 block because they were released alongside seasons 4 through 9 rather than between them.

About My Little Pony

There is no single continuity to keep straight. Generation 1 ran from 1984 to 1992, Generation 2 had toys but no cartoons, Generation 3 went straight to video from 2003 to 2009, Generation 4 is Friendship Is Magic with 221 episodes between October 10, 2010 and October 12, 2019 plus the 2017 film and the Equestria Girls spinoffs, and Generation 5 ran from A New Generation in 2021 to Tell Your Tale's finale in 2024.

Newcomers should start at Friendship Is Magic, season 1, episode 1. It is the era most people mean when they say My Little Pony, and nothing earlier feeds into it.

Good to know

Generation 5 is the one fudge: Tell Your Tale's first short landed April 7, 2022, a month before Make Your Mark, and the two ran alongside each other. Make Your Mark goes first here because it carries the plot and the shorts start assuming it. Nothing has aired since October 17, 2024. Hasbro announced My Little Pony: Forever Friendship on July 24, 2026 for early 2027 on YouTube, in biweekly nine-minute episodes.
