About Contra
Contra starts in 1987 as an arcade run and gun with Bill and Lance against alien forces. Super Contra from 1988 and Contra III from 1992 keep the side and top down mix, while Hard Corps from 1994 branches the Sega path with multiple endings.
Later entries like Shattered Soldier, Contra 4 from 2007 and Rogue Corps from 2019 vary in style, with Operation Galuga from 2024 acting as a full remake of the original. The series has no strict canon across regions, since Probotector versions swapped humans for robots, so mechanics matter more than plot order.
Good to know
Play in release order for the cleanest difficulty curve. Contra III and Hard Corps are the high points of the classic run, while Contra 4 suits handheld fans and Operation Galuga suits new players who want the original with modern saves. Skip Rogue Corps on a short run. No sequel to Galuga had been dated as of September 2026.
