Darkest Dungeon Play Order

Darkest Dungeon in order, from the 2016 Hamlet descent with stress and torchlight through the Crimson Court and Color of Madness expansions to the 2023 stagecoach sequel. Play the first game with DLC before the second, since the sequel assumes you know every hero quirk.

About Darkest Dungeon

Darkest Dungeon from Red Hook Studios launched in January 2016 as a gothic roguelike where heroes gain stress and quirks on each delve. The Hamlet hub sends crusaders, hounds and jesters into ruins, with permadeath closing failed runs. Crimson Court (2017) adds vampires and the Fanatic, while Color of Madness (2018) adds endless waves.

Darkest Dungeon 2 arrived in May 2023 as a road trip sequel with a stagecoach, shrines and no Hamlet base. It reuses heroes with new paths and a mountain finale. No third game was dated by September 2026, with Red Hook patching the sequel's Kingdoms mode.

Good to know

Start with Darkest Dungeon plus both DLC packs before touching the sequel, since quirks and trinkets return with new rules. Play the Hamlet on Radiant mode first if the Stygian clock feels harsh. The sequel plays shorter runs with relationships instead of town upgrades. Treat the series as open while Red Hook expands Kingdoms, but the two main games form a closed pair for now.
