About Dead or Alive
Dead or Alive opened in 1996 as Tecmo's 3D fighter built on counters and holds, with Kasumi fleeing the Mugen Tenshin clan. Team Ninja's sequel in 1999 and DOA3 in 2001 refined the triangle system of strikes, throws and holds across arcade and console.
The series alternated main entries with Xtreme beach spinoffs: Xtreme Beach Volleyball in 2003, DOA4 in 2005, Xtreme 2 in 2006, Paradise in 2010, DOA5 in 2012, Xtreme 3 in 2016 and DOA6 in 2019. Play the numbered entries in release order for the DOATEC saga, and treat the Xtreme games as side trips. No seventh entry has been announced.

The Xtreme spinoffs reuse the cast for volleyball and resort minigames with no story weight, so they slot by release date without affecting the plot.
