About God of War
God of War follows Kratos, a Spartan warrior turned god-killer, through two sagas: the Greek games about his revenge on Olympus, and the Norse games about him raising his son Atreus in a new land. The 2018 game soft-reboots the series and works as an entry point. Valhalla is a free epilogue DLC to Ragnarok, and Sons of Sparta is a 2D metroidvania prequel about a young Kratos.
The mobile game Betrayal is lost to dead storefronts and its story is summarized in later games, so it is noted but not required.
Good to know
Play in release order. The chronological list starts with Ascension and the PSP games, which spoil the original game's reveals and play worse on modern hardware than the Norse saga does.
Newcomers who only want the modern story can play the 2018 game, Ragnarok and Valhalla as a trilogy. A Faye-centered game and a Greek trilogy remake have both been announced with no dates.
