Release order runs God of War, God of War II, Chains of Olympus, God of War III, Ascension. Timeline order pulls Ascension and Chains of Olympus ahead of the 2005 original and puts the 2026 side-scroller Sons of Sparta before everything else. The Norse games, God of War (2018), Ragnarök (2022) and the free Valhalla epilogue (2023), need no reshuffling.
God of War Laufey follows Faye into the afterlife on February 16, 2027, and its story runs alongside both the 2018 game and Ragnarök. The Greek trilogy remake and a new Kratos game are announced but carry no dates.
Good to know
Release order gets the recommendation, because the Greek prequels were built as flashbacks to twists you have already seen. Ghost of Sparta (2010) and Betrayal (2007) are canon portable entries that slot between the numbered games, and God of War III Remastered (2015) is the easy way to play the finale. The Greek trilogy remake, announced February 2026, is early and undated, and an untitled Kratos game confirmed in July 2026 follows Laufey.
