About Jak and Daxter
Jak and Daxter runs from Naughty Dog's open collectathon The Precursor Legacy (2001) into the darker Jak II (2003) and Jak 3 (2004), then the racing spinoff Jak X (2005), the PSP tale Daxter (2006) and the handheld finale The Lost Frontier (2009). Release order is the recommended play order; it matches the story except for Daxter, which fills a gap inside Jak II.
Newcomers should start with The Precursor Legacy. It is short, bright, and shows what the series was before it turned gritty. The PS3 Collection or the PS4 and PS5 ports are the easiest way to play it on modern hardware.

Jak X: Combat Racing is a full combat-racing spinoff set after Jak 3, included because its story follows the trilogy. Daxter (PSP, 2006, developed by Ready at Dawn) takes place during the two-year gap at the start of Jak II; play it fourth or fifth without losing the thread. The Lost Frontier (PS2 and PSP, 2009, developed by High Impact Games) closed the series after Naughty Dog moved to Uncharted; Naughty Dog said in 2021 it had no new Jak and Daxter in development. The PS3 Collection (2012), the PS4 bundle (2017), and the 2024 PS4 and PS5 re-releases of Daxter and Lost Frontier are ports, not new stories.
