About Retro Studios
Retro Studios was founded in Austin in 1998 and moved Metroid to 3D with Metroid Prime on November 18, 2002 for GameCube. Prime 2: Echoes followed in 2004 and Prime 3: Corruption in 2007 for Wii, with all three later packed as Metroid Prime: Trilogy in 2009.
Retro then rebooted Donkey Kong with Donkey Kong Country Returns in 2010 for Wii, helped Nintendo EAD on Mario Kart 7 in 2011 for 3DS, and made Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in 2014 for Wii U. Metroid Prime Remastered arrived February 8, 2023 for Switch with new visuals and dual stick controls. Returns HD followed January 16, 2025 with the 3DS extra levels, then Prime 4: Beyond on December 4, 2025 for Switch and Switch 2, the first new Prime since Corruption in 2007.
Good to know
Release order is play order here. The Prime trilogy tells one arc, so play 1 to 3 in order before the DK games if you want story order too. Mario Kart 7 was a support job with Nintendo EAD, not a full Retro lead. Metroid Prime Remastered is the same 2002 game rebuilt, so it is optional on a replay. Returns HD is the same 2010 DK game in HD, and Prime 4: Beyond is the first new Prime story since 2007.
