About Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts follows Sora, Donald and Goofy across Disney worlds while the Keyblade saga around Xehanort unfolds. Release order is the intended play order: prequels like Birth by Sleep assume you already know the later games.
The HD collections bundle nearly the whole saga, so modern players rarely need original hardware. Missing-Link, the mobile game, was cancelled in May 2025 and sits outside this order; Kingdom Hearts IV starts a new arc in late 2027.
Good to know
Release order is the recommended play order, and newcomers should start with the first game via HD 1.5+2.5, still the cleanest entry point. Resist starting with Birth by Sleep even though it is a prequel. The HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and HD 2.8 collections (PS4 in 2017, Xbox in 2020, Switch cloud in 2022, Steam in 2024) bundle almost everything; 358/2 Days and coded survive only as cutscene compilations inside them. Kingdom Hearts IV is set for late 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2 and PC, with Pixar's Coco as its first confirmed Disney world. A Disney+ anime series was also announced with no date.
