About Marvel vs Capcom

The series began as Marvel licensed fighters like X-Men Children of the Atom, then grew into full Marvel versus Capcom crossovers with two on two and later three on three battles. Each entry reuses sprites and systems but expands the roster and assist rules.

There is no plot to follow, so release order is the practical path. It shows the jump from 2v2 to 3v3, the 2011 revival with Ultimate, and the 2017 shift to Infinity Stones in Infinite.

For modern play, buy the 2024 Fighting Collection for the first six games and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 on PS4, Xbox One or PC. Infinite remains separate and is still sold on PS4, Xbox One and Steam.

Good to know

Start with the Fighting Collection, since it adds rollback netcode and training modes to the arcade classics. Marvel vs Capcom 2 from 2000 is the fan favorite for roster size, while Ultimate from 2011 has the deepest modern scene. No new versus game is announced as of October 2026, but the 2024 collection keeps the series active.
