About Samurai Shodown
Samurai Shodown opened in 1993 as SNK's weapon-based fighter on Neo Geo, with Haohmaru and Nakoruru dueling through 18th-century Japan. Annual sequels through 1996 built the Amakusa and Mizuki sagas, with part II widely ranked among the genre's best.
Later entries ran from part V in 2003 through VI in 2005 and the 3D Sen in 2008, before the 2019 reboot restarted the timeline between the original and part V. Play the 2D run in release order, then the 2019 game. The reboot assumes the early saga behind it.
Good to know
Release order follows the Amakusa and Mizuki sagas in sequence. The 2019 reboot slots between the first two games chronologically but plays best last, since it riffs on their roster. Warriors Rage and the RPG spinoffs stay optional for versus players. The NeoGeo Collection bundles the early run for modern systems.
