About Zork

Zork follows the adventurer in the Great Underground Empire with grues, trolls and thieves from Infocom. Early games from 1980 set parser, lamp and maze rules across three entries. Text stands alone but tools grow.

Middle games move to Beyond and Zero with magic, while Nemesis from 1996 and Grand Inquisitor from 1997 close graphic eras. No new game has been dated. Play era blocks in order, since spells and maps assume the early Empire. Mazes stand alone per age, but lamp and spell rules grow with each era across the Empire.

Good to know

Era order avoids listing ten plus games one by one. Early games set Empire lamp and maze base that later games reuse. Later games add graphics and spells that only click after that base. New players can use modern ports, but the parser lands best after 1980. Start at Zork I. Early games set lamp base that later games reuse; use modern ports but keep 1980 order.
