About Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchcock directed more than fifty features between 1925 and 1976, starting in British silent film with The Pleasure Garden, The Lodger and Blackmail in 1929, his first sound picture. The 1930s run includes The Man Who Knew Too Much in 1934, The 39 Steps in 1935 and The Lady Vanishes in 1938.
Rebecca opened his Hollywood period in 1940, followed by Suspicion, Shadow of a Doubt, Notorious, Rope, Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, Vertigo in 1958, North by Northwest in 1959 and Psycho in 1960. The later years bring The Birds in 1963, Marnie in 1964, Torn Curtain, Topaz, Frenzy in 1972 and Family Plot in 1976.
Good to know
These are standalone stories with no shared continuity, so there is no chronological order to untangle. The silent titles survive in varied prints, and Blackmail exists in both silent and sound versions. The 1934 and 1956 films both called The Man Who Knew Too Much are separate pictures, with the later one a remake. Start with The Lodger, The 39 Steps or Rear Window if fifty films feels like too many.
