About Kenneth Branagh
Kenneth Branagh started as cinema's Shakespeare salesman with Henry V in 1989, then showed a pulp streak with the noir thriller Dead Again (1991) and the comedy Much Ado About Nothing (1993). His full-text Hamlet in 1996 runs over four hours and remains the landmark, shot in 70mm with an all-star cast. Marvel then hired him for Thor in 2011, betting his stagecraft could sell Asgard.
Disney's Cinderella followed in 2015, a straight romantic telling that became a quiet hit. He then played Poirot himself in Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Death on the Nile (2022) and A Haunting in Venice (2023). Belfast (2021), his black and white childhood memoir, won the Oscar for original screenplay. Take the ten in release order and the Shakespeare-to-blockbuster arc reads clearly.
Good to know
This is a selection, not the full directing filmography, which runs past twenty features with shorts and stage recordings. The ten picks cover the Shakespeare core, the Hollywood middle period and the Poirot run plus Belfast. Chronological order matches release order, so one list is enough. Branagh keeps working, with a new feature reportedly in preparation as of October 2026.
