About The Avengers
The Avengers (1961 to 1969) is Britain's definitive spy-fi: John Steed's bowler-hat charm across six series, with Honor Blackman's Cathy Gale giving way to Diana Rigg's Emma Peel and finally Linda Thorson's Tara King. The New Avengers (1976 to 1977) revives Steed with Purdey and Gambit for two more series.
Broadcast order is the guide; the show reinvents its partner dynamic every couple of series. The Emma Peel era (series 4 and 5) is the consensus peak and the natural start for the impatient. The 1998 film with Fiennes and Thurman is a separate misfire, strictly for completists. The show's move from videotape to film shows in every frame.
Good to know
The first series is largely lost and Keel-era, so most viewers start at series 2 or the Peel years without missing anything essential. The New Avengers assumes Steed but needs no plot homework. The 1998 film's reputation is deserved; watch it only as a curiosity after the show. No revival has ever gotten past discussion, so the 1977 end is the close.
